Witnesses called police after seeing a woman jump from the Congress Street Bridge in Watervliet shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, according to preliminary radio traffic.
Investigators determined the woman intentionally jumped from the bridge in an apparent suicide, Watervliet Police confirmed to Daily Voice.
Her name, age, and hometown had not been released as of early Wednesday afternoon.
The City of Troy said its "hearts are heavy following the tragic incident," in a statement on Facebook:
"We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends affected by this loss. This heartbreaking event is a reminder that mental health struggles can impact anyone, and that help is available and accessible. Local support services are available at the Troy Police Department where they maintain a mental health support unit staffed by officers who coordinate with local organizations such as Rensselaer County Mental Health, Joseph’s House, and Unity House. Nearly every Troy Police Officer is certified as part of the Emotionally Distressed Persons Response Team."
